Glance: Bushwick Expressway (I-878)

Further Reading: Bushwick Expressway at NYCRoads

The Bushwick Expressway was proposed in the 1960s as an East-West Expressway that would have linked I-78 with JFK Airport. Here, I layout my personal proposal and determine whether or not it is feasible

Part I: Williamsburg Expressway
The Willamsburg Bridge Approach Near Broadway (Source: Google Maps)

The Bushwick Expressway would begin at the Williamsburg Bridge Approach, before it descends as a bored tunneled segment after passing the BQE

Segment Two: Broadway/Bushwick Ave to Atlantic Ave

The Thomas P O'Neil Tunnel in Boston. The Bushwick Expressway would continue as a Bored Tunnel Segment to Atlantic Avenue (Source:Wikimedia)

The Bushwick Expressway would continue as a Bored tunneled segment. Its Northern Tube along Bushwick Avenue and its Southern Tube along Broadway. The Road would have no exits and only its entrances in Williamsburg and East New York respectively

Segment Three: Atlantic Avenue

Because of Atlantic Avenue's elevation, the freeway would have to be an elevated Span until it reaches Conduit Boulevard, where it would veer off

Segment Four: Conduit Boulevard
The Bushwick Expressway would follow Conduit Boulevard to the Nassau Expressway.

Exit List
Exit 1: BQE/Broadway/S 5th Avenue
Exit 2: Atlantic Ave/Jackie Robinson Parkway
Exit 3: Atlantic Avenue
Exit 4: Linden Boulevard
Exit 5: Belt Parkway

Could it Be Done

Extremely, Extremely Unlikely but it is possible. The Bushwick Tunnels and the Nassau Expressway Extension are the more realistic options. Atlantic Avenue may not be as likely, as such would require eminent domain, which should be avoided at ALL Costs.

Bus lanes would also be included on all segments. a BRT System from Willamsburg bridge to Kennedy Airport would save travel time and reduce train and other traffic.
